Listening to Osvaldo Golijov's recordings will be a truly exceptional and noteworthy event at Muzikos magijos klubas! We will listen to "La Pasión según San Marcos" (The Passion of St Mark), a contemporary classical work written in 2000 by an Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov.
It's no secret that in 2000 we celebrated the 250th anniversary of the death of the musical genius Johann Sebastian Bach. That same year the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart launched a competition for contemporary composers to look at Bach's work in a different, unexpected and, above all, contemporary way. Alongside three other composers, O. Golijov submitted his own 90-minute arrangement of the St Mark's Passion and became one of the winners of the competition. The applause from the audience at the end of the premiere lasted well over half an hour.
The audience's admiration can probably be explained by the uniqueness of this arrangement - O. Golijov has succeeded in transforming Bach's music, making it sound new, while retaining its fundamental traditionalism. This version of the St Mark Passion, however unexpected it may sound, was born in the streets - the composer was inspired by the sounds and rhythms of the streets of small villages in Cuba and Brazil (which he created with the help of drums as well as words).
"In the geographic centres of the Latin American passions - Cuba and Brazil - there is a strong tradition of telling news or stories with voice and drums. This tradition comes from Africa and that is how this Passion is told. The voices represent people who are afraid, who don't understand - and Jesus himself, who understands, but is also afraid - and then is not afraid", is how O. Golijov described his arrangement.
We invite you to get to know and hear this unique piece at Muzikos magijos klubas!
