What did it really mean to play jazz in the US in the 1970s? A meeting with Kęstutis Stančiauskas

Event was held on 2026-03-25
  • The Magic of Music Club will host an exclusive meeting with composer and bass guitar master Kęstutis Stančiauskas, who moved to Lithuania from the US last year. The musician lived and worked across the Atlantic for over 40 years, becoming an active participant in the Chicago jazz scene, performing in many American states and appearing at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Kool Jazz Festival, and Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival.

Kęstutis has released seven albums and has shared the stage many times with Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Jean-Luc Ponty, Pat Martino, Otis Rush, Thelma Houston, Minnie Riperton, and Tina Turner. He has also collaborated actively with renowned Lithuanian performers, including Andrius Mamontovas, Gytis Paškevičius, Neda, and Stasys Povilaitis. The composer's work has been featured in theaters and dance projects, and his recordings have been reviewed in The New York Times, Billboard (three times selected as "Jazz pick of the week"), and the Chicago Tribune.

During the meeting, Kęstutis will talk about his long career, the US jazz scene of the 1970s, and share his memories of personal encounters with the musicians who had the greatest influence on him (Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Count Basie). Archival video recordings from concerts will be shown during the evening, and listeners will be able to hear first-hand about the journey of a musician of Lithuanian origin in the impressive American jazz scene.
