Interestingly, the very first vibraphone in the Baltic states was shipped from the U.S. to Lithuania in 1931 (a year before the world’s first vibraphone recording was made). An ensemble led by violinist Moise Hofmekler introduced the audience to the sound of this instrument at the “Metropolis” restaurant in Kaunas. Before long, the vibraphone’s fledgling history in Lithuania was cut short by World War II, but today this instrument is returning to the stage with renewed vigor and its distinctive sound.
During the concert “Dialogues of Silence,” vibraphonist Marius Šinkūnas, together with his colleagues, will turn a new page in the history of this instrument. The warm, meditative sounds of this instrument will blend here with the jazz guitar and the exceptionally rare, deep timbre of the Lithuanian double-bass birbynė.
Performers: Marius Šinkūnas – vibraphone, compositions
Mindaugas Stumbras – guitar, arrangements
Arvydas Jankus – double bass and soprano birbynė
